Caroline Isabel — editorial

A talk about the price the global South pays for the progress of the North. Historically, Latin America has been serving its resources on silver platters, providing essential resources as food, water, land, and oil, but receiving in return devastated land, polluted rivers, extinction of native species, discrimination and racism. This editorial is to show how much Latin America caters for those countries’ hunger for progress and how much power their money and media control the lives of these people.

When time comes to say goodbye to an old place, leaving the past behind is a difficult moment yet necessary. Being nostalgic erase the present time without bringing back to life the memories. Rooms, paintings, clothes… everything is a reminiscence of a glorious past. We are molded, shaped, sculpted with this past. There is a light at the end of the tunnel and it can only be reached by moving on. It is not giving up, it is simply searching for good in other places. For this editorial, we talk about losing the place you once loved, and trying to not loose yourself in this process.

On the period of military dictatorship in Brazil, people were censured, oponents to the regime were persecuted, tortured and killed. A very broadcasted case was against Stuart Angel. His mother, Zuzu Angel, was a well known fashion designer at the time. She made fashion out of the simple technics. When she knew her son, an oppositor to the dictatorship, was tortured and killed by the military, she decided to create a collection with embroideries of her son’s drawing as a child mixed with military themes, to protest against the regime. She showcased the collection at a show in New York. After that, she was the one persecuted and killed by the dictatorship. My inspiration for this editoral was the political environment of the time, that we could trace some parallels to the ideological scenary and divide of today. Honoring the work of Zuzu Angel, I wanted to bring the lace as the mourning gowns as well as a modernized version of her illustrations on the background.

For my final project at my bachelor’s, I choose to speak about plus-size fashion among teenage girls and address the lack of representation of this public on the media. The inspiration for the editorial came from the 1980s disco and fitness era, as well as its vaporwave aesthetic. The goal was to prove girls in every shape and size have the right to feel comfortable and confident in their bodies, and should not need to change their physic to fit beauty standards. Instead, fashion needs to embrace these young people and find a way to provide them with proper clothing and styles.

Nebulosa is the title of the album of the artist Gallaxia. For this new project with the singer, we created the concept and photoshoot for her album cover, and the cover for each single. We went for an androgynous and almost alien-like aesthetic, playing with a neon and vibrant palette and skin-tight garments. As each single of the album has a different theme, we imagined unique images that could translate the subject of these songs. My inspiration for the photoshoot and the fashion styling was extraterrestrial looks, combined with astronaut space uniforms and the surrealist movement in fashion. To reach this technological and futuristic environment, I used materials such as plastic and latex. As a visual reference, I chose the work of the fashion photographer Pol Kurucz, matches the mood we were searching, with vibrant colors and surrealist themes.
